St. Finbarr’s Gaelic Football Club is one of the oldest established clubs in Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1976, St. Finbarr’s has been key club in the development of Gaelic football in Perth. Our club was named St. Finbarr’s as some of the founding club members at the time hailed from County Cork and as such decided to name the club after the Cork patron saint, St. Finbarr. The club colours were chosen based on the Irish tricolour of green, white and gold and these are still the colours worn by our players today.
Michael (Mick) Morgan was the first club President in 1976. He was supported by many other club players and members, many of whom are still in Perth today. 1978 was a great year for the club with St. Finbarr’s men’s team winning the 7 a side competition, Consul Cup and League cup. Prior to 1976 there were some informal Gaelic football games held in Perth, at which many of the founding club members participated actively in. These informal games were mainly played on what is today Langley Park and also in Nedlands.
One of the other first teams in Perth was Kalamunda (now know as Morley). Some of the other teams St. Finbarr’s competed with in the early days of football in Perth were Greenwood, Queens Park and WAIT (Western Australia Institute of Technology – now Curtin University). Many of the St. Finbarr’s players also competed at the State games from the mid-70’s right through to the current year were our players represented the State at the Australasian games.
The St. Finbarr’s ladies team was formed in 1994 following a women’s exhibition match at the St. Patrick’s Day carnival which was held at Belmont Oval at that time. (Training now takes place at Henderson Park, Wembley for both teams) Following the exhibition game on that day two ladies football teams were established, St. Finbarrs and Thornlie Shamrocks (now known as Western Shamrocks). This also enables the Western Australian ladies team to compete at the Australasian games on a competitive level. Since then the women’s league in Perth has gone with strength to strength and currently has six established women’s football teams.
